Product life cycle, CO2, reduction & offsetting, actions by Switcher in 2009
In 2009, Switcher continues to work internally and to mobilise its suppliers in order to measure and reduce the carbon footprint generated by its commercial activity.
This involves primarily analysing the life cycle of products to determine their greenhouse gas or CO2 equivalent.
This work was assigned in 2008/2009 to Ecointesys, a spin-off of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). An analysis report and a calculator are now available to us to assess the carbon footprint of each product during its manufacturing process (from raw materials to point of sale) and subsequently during its use (average 50 washes).
To find out the carbon footprint of each product, visit: www.respect-code.org then type in your product’s number, name or traceability code; the
With this data now known, Switcher continues in 2009 to reduce the carbon footprint: wind farm at our main supplier in India, drastic reduction in the transportation by air of packages, grouping of shipments in full containers with mandatory rail transport between the port and Switzerland, adaptation of lighting equipment, reduction or elimination of energy-intensive equipment, awareness-raising among employees on this topic.
Since the complete elimination of emissions is impossible, Switcher offsets 13 products financially with myclimate.org, a Swiss organisation The project assigned to this offsetting consists in replacing oil with bio mass which will be used to heat ovens in restaurants, hospitals and school canteens in the Kotdwara region of India in the district of Pauri-Garhwal, to the north-east of New Delhi.
